Postpartum Treatment

Providing expert care to women experiencing anxiety and mood disorders before, during, and after birth.

Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders

While it is common for women to experience baby blues and feel overwhelmed given the significant changes and shifts in life that occur as a result of having a child, there are more significant mental health challenges that may arise. The following are examples of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders that require more substantial mental health treatment in order to provide major relief to women as they navigate the challenges and joys of motherhood:

• Postpartum depression includes persistent feelings of hopelessness and major changes in sleep, appetite, and mood that are not attributable solely to a new baby. Women with postpartum depression may experience thoughts of suicide or feel a loss of interest in activities they usually enjoy.

• Postpartum anxiety includes catastrophic worries, typically about a new child; however, the worries and fears can become generalized. Women with postpartum anxiety tend to experience avoidant behaviors, spiraling thoughts, and feelings of restlessness.

• Postpartum OCD is characterized by obsessive thoughts and compulsions typically surrounding the woman’s child and family. Compulsions can be physical or mental, but they are meant to reduce the woman’s anxiety momentarily and can result in larger- scale avoidant behaviors.
